Let us walk you to the light at the end of the tunnel

Often times as parents, we leave everything up to the medications and the doctors to make our ailments go away. This isn't wrong nor bad if it was only a physical ailment. However, when it comes to a mental illness, it's a totally different ball game. It can be summarized in two words proactive involvement and inclusion.

As parents, schizophrenia comes as  a fearful blow, an extreme sentence of lifetime care giving, watching symptoms, and total sacrifice for life as we know it. Are you ready to jump in? I would truly hope so
I have met and seen parents who dive into their children's illness with no fear, as I have seen parents taking many steps back, which has affected their children's illness in a negative manner. Schizophrenia affected sons, and daughter are not insensitive to your reactions. They are aware of it. They know when you are pulling away, when you are putting your head in the sand, and leaving it all up to the system to care for them. Furthermore, the minute you ask for housing assistance for your child, you are pulling away and let's face it; this may stall  at this particular point any improvement or periods of rehabilitation. If your child is having a psychotic episode where you feel compelled to hospitalize him, do not hesitate. If afterward, he/she is back home,  it is indeed time to put your sleeves up and get involved. Throughout this blog, I have shared my experiences with you, shared the many hits and misses until this day. Today, I have a rehabilitated son who voluntarily takes his medication, makes me smile, goes to the movies with me and spends most of his weekends with friends who are always glad to spend time with him, which also is one great therapy. My son is ten times better from the son he was before and during schizophrenia, we talk now about ways to help others, other parents, other children because we made it through it all by sticking together, and swimming with and against the currents, no hesitations and no delays. You can ask us anything. We would be glad to help you, encourage you, and walk  this path with you.
